Matt Damon on Strike: “I Will Not Go to the Bathroom”

Untitled-1Until everyone has access to clean water and sanitation, Matt Damon will not go to the bathroom.

Damon made this pledge public on Tuesday, February 12, as part of a new campaign, Strike with Me for the non-profit he co-founded:

While steeped in humor (see the video below), the campaign, which asks for supporters to sign up in support of the strike through Water Day, March 22, 2012, has very real roots.

As Damon says between jests with reporters in his announcement video: “Anybody have any idea what invention has saved more lives than any other in the history of humankind? The toilet.” He goes on to report that twice the population of the United States currently lacks access to clean water and sanitation.

Unlike similar cause campaigns, Damon chooses humor over solemn black and white epilogues or tear-jerker speeches typically orated by celebrities in similar campaigns. The Los Angeles Times reports that this is an unfamiliar terrain for cause-marketers, but also represents a shift among them to smaller-budget online videos rather than expensive TV advertisements.

A scene like this, with the support of a celebrity, seems entirely possible for even the smaller non-profits.

Strike with Me asks us to sign up on their page to make our voice heard. Stand in support of Matt Damon’s (nearly impossible) toilet strike. Another ingenious piece of it: they’ve created applications for users to sign up through Facebook and Twitter. will then automatically post funny, weekly news to supporters’ accounts.

Sign up today to stand with Matt Damon on clean water and sanitation, while showing off your sense of humor.
